The first residents have started moving into one of Wiltshire's newest housing developments, including a local couple who legally completed within three weeks of reserving their home.
Calvin Shaw and Kay Holloway from Wiltshire were amongst the first people to move into their brand-new home at Hunters Wood, a new development on the edge of Melksham which will offer 225 much-needed two, three and four bedroom homes.
Nine of the homes are now occupied with a further six homes due to be complete this summer and the rest to follow through the autumn and into next year.
Calvin, a service engineer for an auto motor company, and Kay, a care administrator for a local charity, admitted that as first-time buyers they were very picky when it came to choosing their first home together.
Calvin commented, "We had a very specific checklist so we had seen a lot of places before finding Hunters Wood. Although it wasn't an area we were aware of before, we realised it ticked all the boxes straight away.”
"A big garden was really important to us, especially at the moment, and we were looking for two bedrooms and a parking space too. We were so surprised and pleased that this home actually had a third bedroom and two parking spaces within our budget."
Named Hunters Wood to reflect the area's historic roots as a royal forest where Tudor kings roamed and hunted, the new development is set in a beautiful part of rural Wiltshire. It is within walking distance of Melksham's historic centre, shops, cafés and restaurants, has good local schools and is surrounded by villages and open countryside.
Calvin and Kay bought their home using the Government's Help to Buy scheme which enables people to buy a brand-new home with a 5% deposit on a property up to a value of £600,000 and a 5-year interest-free government loan for up to 20% - which allows buyers to take out a 75% mortgage.
Kay describes what it was like moving home during a pandemic: “When we first found Hunters Wood it was already quite far into the building process and moving during the pandemic meant we couldn't visit the house that often. Despite this, we are so happy with how the house has been designed. From the kitchen to the flooring, it's just the style we would have picked ourselves."
Calvin continued: "We were a bit unsure at first about buying a new build, but after speaking to other people and reading around, we only heard good things about David Wilson Homes. We were so sure after seeing our home at Hunters Wood that we wanted to get the process going quickly. We legally completed within 3 weeks.”
"As first-time buyers we weren't sure what we were meant to be doing, but David Wilson Homes were really helpful. They were great at chasing things and if we had questions we could always call and were pointed in the right direction, which made the whole experience much less daunting."
Louise Ware, sales director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West added: "We are so pleased to have helped Calvin and Kay secure their dream home so quickly and are delighted to welcome them and our other first residents to Hunters Wood. People are moving into a broad range of home types and sizes, making Hunters Wood a really diverse, mixed community. The homes have been designed to have a traditional look with all the requirements of modern-living and residents will benefit from being both well connected but with the countryside and all of its benefits on the doorstep."
